5.17 Man Overboard

(a) Immediate Initial Action

The response action must start immediately from the moment a person detects a Man Overboard. Constant lookout must be maintained by the person noticing the man overboard.

       (i) "Initial Action" by the person who observes the MOB first

Shout and pass the word: MOB (side) on radio to bridge or to a nearby person.

Nearest person with radio informs the Duty Officer on bridge.

Duty officer initiates Williamson turn / Anderson turn by wheel Hard over on the side of fall, releases man overboard marker, marks GPS/ECDIS MOB position, raises alarm, and calls the Master.

Note down wind speed and direction, estimate current. Inform Engine room to prepare for maneuvering / stopping.

Additional lookouts posted, Perform recovery Maneuver. Broadcast message on VHF on ch16 or emergency channel of Port (in case vessel is along coast). Contact nearest RCC. Sound, Hoist Signals if vessels in vicinity.

Record the facts in the bell book, as much as possible.

Rescue Station Muster Activated, Follow Rescue procedures as per RPWP.


(b) Additionally, for Delayed Action

  1. 1. Make announcement for the person and re-check for him
  2. 2. If still not found, raise alarm, inform master
  3. 3. Find the time elapsed since the occurrence of the casualty
  4. 4. Commence Recovery Manoeuvre by Scharnow Turn or Williamson Turn
  5. 5. Follow RPWP procedures and Rescue Muster station activated
